Max Pashm: Old Meets New
5th March

Max Pashm is a live performance artist and DJ as well as a producer, remixer and compilation compiler. He plays a blend of traditional and electronically fused dance music, combining Klezmer, Balkan, Greek, Gypsy rhythms and melodies.

In his workshop he will introduce participants to the ideas and possibilities of mixing traditional Jewish music with beats and loops. He will also talk a bit about looking for original sources of music and remixing with contemporary beats. He will be encouraging participants to have a go at playing live to electronically generated beats to create a modern Jewish fusion mix.

Max has lectured on field recording in Greece and has taught percussion for many years. He has run recording projects with a wide selection of musicians. He has lectured at the Brighton School of Audio.

Max Pashm was one of the early pioneers of world music fusion. Signed to Sony Music in 1997, his debut album Weddings, Barmitzvahs & Funerals a blend of Klezmer, Sephardic, Greek and Middle-EAstern melodies blended and fused with electronic beats and bleeps was an international success.

His live shows also received great acclaim and Max became established as the Electronic ambassador of Jewish fusion, touring Europe and Israel from 1997 - 2001.

Along the way, Max has worked with artists including Nitin Sawhney, Levellers, Palyrria, Merlin Shepherd, Stelios Petrakis and has remixed Ekova, Ska Cubano, Simon & Garfunkel, Tragix, Musikas. He is very involved with the Balkan Beats scene exploring where Klezmer meets Greek and all in between.

His new album, Never mind the Balkans... here's Max Pashm is due for release in May and features many guests including Amsterdam Klezmer Band, Ska Cuban and the Bagdaddies.
